“Boobquake” and other Feminist ideas…

Recently there was a devastating earthquake in Iran. In response to this a cleric stated that God was punishing the people for immodesty: women who dress provocatively caused the earthquake. Now, I’ve written about these sort of ludicrous statements before so I won’t repeat anything in regards to divine justice. However, I will comment on a recent challenge to this claim of promiscuity causing earthquakes:
Tomorrow, April 26, 2010, has been declared “Boobquake” by a female blogger (apparently a college student somewhere). She decided to pit science against this claim by encouraging women to wear clothes that would be considered immodest in order to invoke divine wrath (or to prove that it doesn’t exists).
I obviously, as previously noted, don’t believe that God causes natural disasters to punish people for moral faults but I do have something against women going out of their way to distract men. I also have a problem with women in general who want to have the right to dress provocatively and then complain about men treating them like objects. If you dress like a sex object, you are going to be treated as a sex object; simple as that.
Things like “Taking Back the Night” and this “Boobquake” are interesting causes but perhaps they don’t help anyone. The general idea of reducing sexual assault and rape and the right to move freely throughout the night (these are the goals of TBTN) are great causes but provocative dress is not a right nor a freedom. Whatever happened to chivalry? What ever happened to modesty? Is it really so hard to believe that women who respect themselves in how they dress are respected by the men around them? Is there really something wrong with having an escort to protect you from predators? Where are the men to be there to respect and protect the women?
Men have the right to not be teased and women have the right to be treated with respect. Women have the right to dignity and men have the right to protect and serve.
I’m not sure I ever really defined a “man” and I’m not sure I can fully define such an abstract concept. I do know that I have high standards for myself and the people my younger sisters choose to date. I have high standards because I know the lowest of the low and I don’t want to be them or what they do to women. We all deserve respect but we have to respect ourselves, love ourselves, before we can expect to be loved and respected by someone else.
Tomorrow I anticipate some wonderful views but I also anticipate sexual harassment and offended women who are gawked at by guys. I’ll try my best not to stare but if you make it hard for me to not look, don’t complain when I do. As an aside, I have nothing against, nor do I know, this no doubt wonderful woman who runs BlagHag.com. I just want to make my opinion known about promiscuity and a person’s “right” to be treated like a piece of meat.
